Description

Under general direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent position is responsible for providing leadership and management to all the divisions of Recreation to include: Recreation Facilities and Programs, Special Facilities and Programs, Aquatics, Athletics, Adaptive, Adult Leisure, Outdoor Adventure, Evaluations, and Community Events. The Assistant Superintendent will be responsible for strategic facility and program planning, implementing action plans, standards of operations, developing strong sustainable relationships with community stakeholders and building a cross functional team that works together to deliver quality recreation innovative programs parish wide, to achieve objectives following BREC’s Master Plan. The incumbent will have 5-6 direct reports that oversee a staff of 400 employees (full-time, part-time, temporary seasonal) exercise independent judgment in determining priorities and be responsible for an approx. $16 million-dollar annual budget.

Education

  • Required: Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Area of Study (Major): Recreation, Park Resources, Park & Recreation Management, Public Administration, Leisure Services, or closely related field.
  • Preferred: Park & Recreation Management/ Public Administration, Leisure Services, or closely related field.

Certification(s)

  • Required: Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP), through National Recreation and Parks Association. Must be able to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Preferred: CPRE (Certified Parks and Recreation Executive) through NRPA
  • License(s) Required: Valid driver’s license. Must be able to obtain valid Louisiana driver’s license within six months of hire

Work Experience

  • Minimum: eight (8) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in public parks and recreation and/or management of similar activities, including five (5) years leadership experience at senior level management preferably in an organization of comparable size and complexity. Equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered
  • Preferred: Ten (10) or more years related experience, at least five (5) in the field of recreation and leisure services
